The Farm

[back to THEMES]

Home

  Objectives ~

Farms are important to us.  They provide us with food from plants and animals.

There are many different kinds of farms: dairy, food (vegetables and fruits), Christmas Tree farms, animal farms (cattle, poultry, pig, horse, fish, etc.).

We get milk and other dairy foods from the dairy farm.
~ There is a definite process of milk production from cow to store.
~ Many foods are made from milk (ice cream, cheese, yogurt, sour cream, whipping cream, cottage
cheese).

There are certain animals that are typically found on a farm: horse, pig, cow, hen, rooster, sheep, ducks to name a few.

Animal babies are called by different names than their parents: cow, bull, and calf; hen, rooster, and chick; mare, stallion, and foal; exe, ram, and lamb; sow, hog, and piglet.

Other animals besides chicks are hatched from eggs.
~ There are many different kinds of eggs – some have hard shells, some have jelly-like shells, some have leathery shells.
~ Some animal babies are born live, not hatched from
eggs.

Some insects can be helpful to the farmer, and some can be very harmful.

Montesano is a rural town, and farms of all sizes
are all around.  Even though several children
each year might live on a farm,
they always enjoy this Theme ~
and even seem to learn something new!

A highlight each year is we hatch baby chicks in class!
Former students come back each April just to see!

To the Farm

Horses, donkeys, cows that moo,
Chickens, kittens, piglets too,
Fish that swim down in the pond,
Ducklings quacking all day long.
All these animals you can see
If you go to the farm with me.

All Around the Barnyard

All around the barnyard
The animals are fast asleep.
Sleeping cows and horses,
Sleeping pigs and sheep.
Here comes the cocky rooster
To sound his daily alarm.
"Cock-a-doodle-doo!
Wake up sleepy farm!"

Rooster

The farm is in a flurry.
The rooster caught the flu.
His cock-a-doodle-doo
Has changed to cock-a doodle-choo!

Cow

How come a cow
Never says "Ow!"
Whenever there's milking to do?
It doesn't say "Ow!"
For it pleases the cow,
So instead, the cow says "Moo!"

The Farmer

Sun is coming up
Farmer's out the door,
He will go to milk the cows,
And start his daily chores.
Sun is going down
Horse is in the stable,
All the fields are planted now,
Supper's on the table.
