  Friendship!

[back to THEMES]

  Objectives ~

Friends are important to our well-being and happiness.

To make friends, we need to act friendly – smile, talk to others, play with them, want to spend time with them.

There are things that we can do to keep friends as well as be friendly to others, such as cooperation, sharing, spending time with others, and caring about others.

“You don’t have to like everyone, but you do need to be nice to everyone (or avoid them if you can’t be nice).”

Valentine’s Day is a time to remember our friends and family with special cards called Valentines.

~ what talent!

Friendship is a skill we work on from day one of school.
Valentine's seems an appropriate time to brush up
on our friendship skills.

Friendship builds community which is a goal
in my classroom - that we are there for each other
as we learn and work together!

With a Friend

With a friend I can slide.
With a friend I can hide.
With a friend I can walk.
With a friend I can talk.
I like my friend an awful lot.

FRIENDS

I had a box of crayons,
All shiny, straight and new.
I lent a friend the red one,
And -- oops -- it broke in two!

My friend said she was sorry,
But I said "I don't care,
'Cause now we both can color
With one crayon -- we can share!"

I'm a Little Valentine
(Tune: I'm a Little Teapot)

I'm a little valentine
Red and white,
With ribbons and lace
I'm a beautiful sight.

I can say "I love you,"
On Valentine's Day.
Just put me in an envelope
And give me away!

~

Here's a Little Groundhog
(to the tune of "I'm a Little Teapot")

Here's a little groundhog, furry and brown,
He's popping up to look around.
If he sees his shadow, down he'll go.
Then six more weeks of winter - Oh No!!

 Mr. Groundhog
(to the tune of "London Bridges")

Mr. Groundhog down below,
Pop up through the fluffy snow,
See his shadow watch him go,
Winter's here to stay.

Mr. Groundhog down below,
Pops up through the fluffy snow,
Wide awake he wants to play,
Spring is on it's way.

    February Quilt
Thanks to Mrs. Pohlmeyer's Kinderpage for this wonderful quilt idea!  We loved making it and it turned out fabulous!  I made my own patterns taken from the TLC project for the groundhog square mentioned in    site.  We were so tickled, the children wanted to show off what they had done!

Valentine Mailboxes
For years I have had the children decorate these paper plate "mailboxes."  I use the stiff paper plates, cutting some in half, inverting them, and then stapling them around the edge.  They are made ahead of time.  The children cut out hearts and decorate them in their own way.  They do need to put the big red heart with their picture on it on the front.  A class photo/name sheet is sent home and the children put the individual pictures on their Valentine's for their friends.  This makes it easy for them to "mail" their own Valentines!  I just staple the mailboxes on the wall - they seem to stay up just fine.  They were really stuffed this year - a few had to pass theirs out at the Party because we couldn't get any more in!

  Valentine's Day Party
This is such a simple party - the children have so much fun just opening their Valentine's from each other!  There are lots of thank yous and oohs and ahhs!

Decorating the cookies and the heart and arrow shaped cheese snacks were yummy ~ thanks to some special moms!

100 Day Celebration!
We made a caterpillar with 100 body pieces first thing on this special day.  The children cut out the circles and added 2 legs for each circle.  As they finished them, I wrote the numbers on them and stapled and taped them up on our busy wall!  We had to count when it was finished to be sure we had all the numbers!

We also marched around the room and counted to 100, we ate 100 snacks, and we thought about what we would do if we were given a 100 dollar bill!

The children brought in 100 collections and we listed them on a chart.  It was a fun day together!
