  Objectives ~

PLANTS ~

 Plants are living things.

Plants vary in size, color, and shape.

Plants need sun and warmth, air, water, and a place to grow (such as soil).

Plants grow in many different kinds of environments.

ANIMALS ~
Animals of all ages have basic needs for food, shelter, and protection.

Animals have different body coverings and different ways of moving.
~ They can be covered with fur, feathers, scales, or smooth skin.
~ They can move by flying, crawling, swimming, climbing, walking, or slithering.

There are many different kinds of animals that grow and live in many different environments.

Plants and animals alike must adapt and change to their environments and the changing weather found in each.

Yet another interesting environment is the temperate evergreen forest,
much like we live in here in the Pacific Northwest.
We learn about the plants and animals typically found here.
We also talk about the weather and locate some of the other areas on the globe
that also have this type of environment.
We learn about what plants and animals need to grow and survive,
and we compare ourselves to them.

The Tree

I am a type of tree you know
I start out small and then I grow
My roots spread deep under the ground
To help me so I won't fall down

My trunk protects me up and down
And carries all my food around
The inside part of me is dead
The outer layers grow instead

From my trunk grow many branches
This is the part of me that dances
On my branches, green needles you'll see
They use the sun, to make food for me

Do I sound like a tree you've seen?
Have you guessed? I'm an evergreen!

    Where Do They Live?
This was a window project.  After coloring the two sheets, the children carefully glued the edges together so that when they opened a window, they would see the animal that lived in that type of forest home.  They enjoyed this activity.

  Plant & Animal Book
In years past we have worked on a BIG book about these four habitats by drawing each one on our own on large manila drawing paper (12X18") and then coloring, cutting and gluing printed animals found there.  We drew some of the land features and a few plants commonly found in each place.  This was a long and sometimes hard project, but when the children saw the end result they were very pleased.  We had a few sorting pages and additional animal cutouts, plus we put in our information about plants in general.  It did turn out nice, but with more children this year and the needs of this particular class I wasn't sure we would make it through with our sanity in tack.  The children learned as much, but with simpler activities.
