PLANTS ~

 Plants are living things.

Plants vary in size, color, and shape.

The seeds, roots, stem, leaves, and flower of plants have certain functions.
~ Seeds contain the new baby plant.
~ Roots hold the plant in place and take in water and minerals.
~ Stems support the plant and carry the water and minerals from the roots to the leaves and food from the leaves to the rest of the plant.
~ Leaves make food for the plant with the help of the sun.
~ Flowers produce new seeds for the plant.

Plants need sun and warmth, air, water, and a place to grow (such as soil).

Plants grow in many different kinds of environments.

 ANIMALS ~

Animals vary in the ways they grow and develop and care for their young.

Still, all animals grow to resemble their parents.

Animals of all ages have basic needs for food, shelter, and protection.

Animals have different body coverings and different ways of moving.
~ They can be covered with fur, feathers, scales, or smooth skin.
~ They can move by flying, crawling, swimming,
climbing, walking, or slithering.

There are many different kinds of animals that grow and live in many different environments.

Plants and animals alike must adapt and change to their environments and the changing weather found in each.

Learning about a jungle - a rainforest - is very exciting to young children because of all of the different plants and animals that live there.
While we here in the Northwest are use to the RAIN, we are not use to the warm climate all year round!
If there is one vacation I would love to take it would be to a Tropical Rainforest!  I think I could just Theme animals all year and still run out of time!
Forestry is very important in our area and we can understand the importance of such an environment and its impact on all of us.

    Plant Parts Poster
We began this big science theme talking about plants - their parts, what they need to grow, and what uses that have for animals and people.
(We will review this in our Spring Theme when we work with seeds and plants in the classroom.)

What Do Plants Need
A simple book from the Teacher Resource book,
They children cut and colored the pictures and wrote in the missing words.

Tropical Rainforest Animals
A printable book from Enchanted Learning.  The children enjoyed writing in the missing letters and being able to share a few facts with their families when the books went home.
