  Objectives ~

Plants

Plants are living things.

Plants need sun and warmth, air, water, and a place to grow (such as soil).

Plants grow in many different kinds of environments.

Animals

Some animals care for their young as they grow.
~ They provide food, protection from harm, shelter and warmth, and teach them skills for survival.
   ~
Mainly birds and mammals care for their young.

Animals of all ages have basic needs for food, shelter, and protection.

Animals have different body coverings and different ways of moving.
~ They can be covered with fur, feathers, scales, or smooth skin.
~ They can move by flying, crawling, swimming,
climbing, walking, or slithering.

There are many different kinds of animals that grow and live in many different environments.

Plants and animals alike must adapt and change to their environments and the changing weather found in each.

This particular Theme of Plants & Animals in our world is one of our big Science focuses.
We learn about different habitats and the plants and animals typically found there.
We also talk about the weather and locate some of these areas on the globe.

We learn about what plants and animals need to grow and survive, and we compare ourselves to them.

This is a fun Theme for the children because they have a lot to share about places they have visited and what they have learned for books and television.

We begin with Plants & Animals in the Polar regions - both the Artic & the Antarctic.  We learn about adaptation and migration.
We also learn about Winter effects in the forests near to us.  Living in the Northwest, we are close to this environment
and the impact it can have on our own communities.

Arctic Animals

Polar bears
Look snowy white.
Arctic hares
Hop out of sight.

Sweet harp seals
Change as they grow.
Snowy owls fly
High and then low.

Do they all
Stay snug and warm,
In snow and ice
And winter storms?

  ~ Sue LaBella

 The Penguin

I am a bird you know quite well,
All dressed in black and white.
And even though I do have wings
They're not designed for flight.
I waddle, waddle, waddle,
On my funny little feet.
Across the icy snow I go
To find a fishy treat!

~ Roxanne Williams

Little Polar Bear

Little Polar Bear
White as the snow
Sat on the ice
Near the cold water's flow.
I am hungry, he said
and made a wish
Then stuck in his paw
And pulled out a fish!

I Wish I Were a Walrus

I wish I were a Walrus
A waddling on the shore.
I'd say, "Move over, here I come!"
And bellow out a "ROAR!"
I wish I were a Walrus
A basking in the sun.
I'd flap my flippers, oh so loud
To show I'm number one!
I wish I were a Walrus
A strutting all my stuff.
If anybody picked on me
I'd show them my big tusks!
