Winter Time!

[back to THEMES]

Home

  Objectives ~

Winter brings colder temperatures, and people must change what they wear and what they do.
~ Hats, mittens, and heavy coats are common clothes in winter.
~ Building snowmen and other snow activities are common in winter.

Winter weather includes such things as wind and cloudy days, cold rains, snow, hail, and ice.

Plants “go to sleep” - - they shut down for the winter, growth is very slow if at all.

Animals adjust in different ways - - some migrate to warmer climates, some hibernate for the winter, and some change colors for protection while they must search for food each day in the cold.

Even though it doesn't snow much here in Montesano,
we love talking about snowmen and what we would do in
the show!
We also enjoy activities about mittens!
Winter weather is fun to think about as well.

The Snowball

I made myself a snowball
Just as perfect as could be.
I thought I’d keep it as a pet
And let it sleep with me.
I gave it some pajamas
And a pillow for its head.
Then, last night it ran away,
But first – it wet the bed!

Snowflake
[to the tune of “I’m a Little Teapot”]

I’m a little snowflake whit and round,
I don’t make a sound as I fall to the ground.
When you look out your window you will shout,
“I’m putting on my mittens and going out!”

A Chubby Little Snowman

A Chubby little snowman
Had a carrot nose.
Along came a bunny,
And what do you suppose?
That hungry little bunny,
Looking for his lunch,
Ate that little snowman's nose,
Nibble, nibble, crunch!

Snow

The snow fell softly all the night.
It made a blanket soft and white.
It covered houses, flowers, and ground,
But did not make a single sound!

The Mitten Song

"Thumbs in the thumb-place,
Fingers all together!"
This is the song
We sing in mitten weather.
When it is cold,
It doesn't matter whether
Mittens are wool,
Or made of finest leather.
This is the song
We sing in mitten weather:
"Thumbs in the thumb-place,
Fingers all together!"

Warm Mittens

I wiggle my left hand,
I wiggle my right,
Inside of my mittens,
So warm and so tight.

I wiggle my pinkie.
I wiggle my thumb,
So when I make snowballs,
My hands don't get numb.

Mittens

Mittens for the snow time
When the world is white.
Mittens for my two hands,
Mittens left and right.
Mittens with a thumb place,
Mittens warm and snug,
Mittens make me feel like
A bug inside a rug!

    Five Little Men
This is a great poem that the children illustrate and move the snowmen so that they actually "disappear" as they say the rhyme.  (They just fold the accordion-folded snowmen back one at a time and then close the cover for the "no little men" verse.)

    Doily Snowmen
We made our snowmen this year out of doilies, real buttons, and paper hats and scarves.
This idea came from
- and we loved it!
They graced our Office hallway for a couple of weeks!

January Family Project
I sent home a note and a piece of white construction paper.  Families were to create a snow creature.  We read Snowballs by Lois Elhert in class.  Thanks to    for this fun activity!

Jack Frost

Where did you get that little red nose?
Jack Frost kissed it, I suppose.
He kissed it once,
He kissed it twice.
Poor little nose, it’s as cold as ice!

Winter Cold

Hat and mittens keep us warm,
We are ready for the storm.
Zip your coat up to your chin,
Do not let the cold winter in!

Jack Frost

The temperature is freezing!
It's less than thirty-two.
Cause look who's on my window,
It's Jack Frost, that's who!

 Snowflakes
Tune: Sailing, Sailing

Snowflakes, snowflakes,
Falling to the ground.
Each one rests so gently,
They never make a sound!
Snowflakes, snowflakes,
Are so pure and white,
The special thing about them is-
No two are alike.

Frost
Tune: The Farmer in the Dell

The frost is on the roof,
(Point hands over head)
The frost is on the ground.
(Point to the floor)
The frost is on the window,
(Make window with your hands)
The frost is all around!
(Make large circles with hands)

 Snow

The snow fell softly all the night
It made a blanket soft and white.
It covered houses,
flowers and ground,
But it didn't make a single sound!

Sledding

High hills,
Spins, spills,
Winter thrills-
We're sledding!

Gliding, riding,
Slipping, sliding-
Flying, crying-
"We're sledding!"

 Winter, Winter!

Winter, winter.
Let's go skate.
Winter, winter.
Don't be late.
Winter, winter.
Let's go roll.
Winter, winter.
In the snow.
Winter, winter!

  Winter Weather
A fun individual book about different kinds of winter weather adapted to the pattern from Brown Bear, Brown Bear by Bill Martin, Jr.
Each page had a simple, fun art piece.  The children could read the whole book easily.

Thanks to fellow K Teacher, Kathy Lauckhart, for the great idea!
